What is the main idea of this article?

What is something you learned from this reading that you will use in your teaching?

  1. The main idea of the article is "locating students' mathematical develoopment in social and cultural context while simultaneously treating learning as a process of adaptive reorganization". What I took that to mean was meeting students where they are at, both individually and whole classroom, and naturally guiding them forward by using the social part(explaining thinking, asking questions, etc.) of the mathematics classroom. Students are explaining their thinking and asking questions while the teachers acts as a facilitator and notating student dialogue to clarify to others a verbal explanation.

The fact that I am more cognizant of the social part of learning, will help me in teaching mathematics to a whole classroom. I am ready to meet students where they are and cultivate an environment to learn and grow. I like that the author describes it as an active, constructive process. Is there ever a time where you just tell students something if they are not getting it? I know that is not part of math recovery, but can you ever just say, "that is called making a ten", or something like that?
